I wish there were that many hours in my day. This time of year always sneaks up me. Not that I don’t like looking for for the perfect gift, wrapping presents, making cookies, decorating the Christmas tree and everything else in between. I just don’t ever seem to think about all this stuff months before.
One of these years I really going to start Christmas shopping months before. I know I say it every year and every year I wait until the last possible minute. This year I waited until the last possible minute and I’m not even done yet. Christmas is less then a week away, whatever am I going to do? How about not worry so much about the presents and focus on what really matters, spending time with my family and friends and the true meaning of Christmas.
Christmas is a time to be around family and friends enjoying one another. Sharing stories, singing songs or doing whatever makes you happy. Its not about the presents you receive or the presents you are giving or even who has the most presents. Be happy for the small things in life and it will make you love the big things even more.
Last weekend we traveled to the cut your own Christmas tree farm and wondered around until we found the perfect tree. We get it home, haul it inside and get it all setup. Its standing in the living room looking royal. I don’t decorate right away because I have to be in the right mood. Over the next few hours the tree stands in the living still looking royal and then all of the sudden it just falls over. I try and lift it up myself but I can’t get a good grip and I end up calling my mom and asking her to come help me.
My mom comes over and we hoist the tree back up to regain its royal status. Everything seems fine. I go to bed and wake up to a surprise. The darn tree has falling over again. I call my mom and she is determined at this point to get the tree to stand up. She goes to the store and gets heavy duty fishing line so we can tie the tree to the wall. We secure the tree to the wall and once again a few hours go by and the tree falls over again. Super determined this time, my mom suggests that a bigger stand is needed. Off to the store she goes. She comes back with a bigger stand and more determined then ever. We start to lift the tree from the current stand and we can’t figure out why its not coming out. Well duh we forgot to untie it from the wall. Cutting the fishing line never felt so good. We get the tree into the new stand and finally the tree is standing and it seems secure. Only time will tell at this point.
Next comes getting all the tree needles off the floor. The vacuum seems like the logical choice or so we thought. The vacuum doesn’t want to pick up the tree needles. After close examination we notice that one of my son’s action figures is stuck in the vacuum. No wonder the vacuum didn’t want to work. I start to try and figure out how to take a parrt the vacuum. Not has easy as it looks. Realizing that a screwdriver is needed to unscrew the base, we locate a screwdriver and get to work. After a few minutes the action figure is freed! Now for the hard part, putting the vacuum back together. I only took two screws out and laid them on the carpet next to me, now you would think that I could easily find these screws, oh no that was not the case. We looked everywhere for them and after a few minutes decided to use different screws and then looked down to see the other ones right there in front of me, where I had left them. After quickly getting the vacuum back together, it is time to clean up the tree needles. Yay the vacuum worked!! NO more tree needles. I had never been so happy to finally be done with putting up a Christmas tree. The tree has not fallen over since and it now has pretty blue lights and soon it will have beautiful ornaments adorning it.
This year my family has decided to scale down the Christmas gifts and focus on the more meaningful part of Christmas, family Which is what Christmas is all about.
Over the years the world has seemed to forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. Everyone has become greedy, focused on getting a great deal that retail stores feel the need to open their doors on Thanksgiving; when families should be together; not working for the all the mighty dollar. I will even go has far to say that Black Friday should be done away with. I find the whole thing ridiculous. People fighting over objects just so they can save a few dollars. And for what? The bragging rights? I understand wanting to save money on gifts but do we have to fight each other for them? NO!
Let’s take back Christmas and celebrate it they way so many generations before us have. Being together with family, baking cookies, decorating the tree and sharing memories. Christmas is not about the gifts and who got what. Christmas is about loving one another and being thankful for what you have.
The best Christmas I ever had was when I was in High School and my choir adopting a family in need. We gathered coats, toys, household items and much more. We were able to give them a Christmas where they were not able to. It felt so good to be able to put a smile on their faces. I will remember that feeling for the rest of my life.
Has you are out shopping for that perfect gift; take a minute to think about what Christmas really means to you.
Happy Holidays Everyone! I won’t be posting for the next few days as I will be celebrating Christmas. To all of you who are celebrating I hope you have a great time with family and friends. I love this time year, I get to spend time with my family and we always celebrate Christmas with some family traditions. We always open one present on Christmas Eve and we always have quiche for breakfast on Christmas morning. Christmas dinner is a time were family and friends gather around a huge table and eat wonderful food until we have to unbuckle our belts. Does your family have any holiday traditions? Tell me about them.
This family has done a Christmas video instead of a Christmas card. The video is very cute and I am sure it will bring a smile to your face. Enjoy!
I saw this had to share it with you all. It made laugh, cry and jump for joy all with in a few minutes. I love that Westjet Airline took upon themselves to spread Christmas joy to all their passengers that day. What do you think? Did it make you cry too?
